Tsivolko Bay

Tsivolko Bay (Russian залив Цивольки ( Zaliv Tsivol'ki)) ist a fjord on the east coast of Novaya Zemlyas in the Kara Sae north of Russia.[1]

Not to be confused with the Tsivolko Islands in the Nordenskiöld Archipelago.

History[edit]

First mapped 1838-1839 in an expedition led by its namesake Avgust Tsivolko.[2]

Dumping grounds of radioactive waste at Novaya Zemlya, position 2: 2 nuclear reactors and 60% of the Lenin's nuclear fuel

In 1967 a damaged OK-150 pressurized water reactor of the nuclear powered icebreaker Lenin was dumped east of the bay.

Since the whole Island has been used for nuclear weapons testing and final storage all throughout the Cold War, it poses a significant health threat to this day and is uninhabitable.[3]
