Emma Louise Blackery[2] (born 11 November 1991)[3] is a British singer-songwriter and YouTube vlogger from Basildon, Essex.[3][4] Her main YouTube channel has over 1.2 million subscribers and over 128 million video views.[5]

Early life and education

Emma Louise Blackery was born in Basildon, Essex. She is the only child of Sheila and Michael Blackery, who separated when she was thirteen. Throughout childhood and her teenage years, Emma was raised predominantly by her father. After her parents separated, Blackery's mother went on to have two more children, Febe and Travis.[4]

Blackery grew up listening to Michael Jackson and Madonna[4] and taught herself to play guitar at the age of twelve years old after discovering music by Busted, McFly and Green Day.[6] She would later cite Good Charlotte, blink-182, The White Stripes, Placebo, Paramore and Twenty One Pilots as inspirations for her own music.[7]

Blackery attended The Bromfords School[8][9] and SEEVIC College.[10]

Music

Emma Blackery's first EP, Human Behaviour, was released in early 2012.[11] Blackery initially created her YouTube channel, emmablackery, to promote her music. In July 2013, Blackery released her second EP, Distance, accompanied by a music video for the lead track, "Go The Distance". The music video was uploaded to her main YouTube channel and currently has more than 1,000,000 views.[12] The EP reached No. 1 on the iTunes Rock chart within the first week of its release.[13][14] Blackery released her third EP, Perfect, on 11 November 2014, her 23rd birthday,[15] and the song "Perfect" entered the UK Rock & Metal Singles Chart at number 8.[16]

In October 2015, Blackery announced that she was in the process of writing and recording her fourth EP, entitled Sucks To Be You.,[17] due for release in May 2016.[18] On 9 April 2016 she publised a teaser of the song on her website.[19] The single and music video were released on 13 May 2016. "Sucks to be You" is the first single from her fourth extended play of the same name.[20] The extended play was released on 27 May 2016.

On 4 April 2016, Blackery announced that she would be joining pop punk band Busted as a special guest on their Pigs Can Fly Tour 2016.[21] On 27 May 2016, the day of her 4th EP release, Blackery announced a tour in the UK in October 2016.[22]

YouTube

Blackery currently has three active YouTube channels:

  • emmablackery - Blackery's main channel, created in May 2012, on which she hosts her primary content including vlogs, music videos, comedy sketches and other miscellaneous content. She began to gain a following from reading excerpts from Fifty Shades of Grey on her channel, but these videos were later removed due to copyright complaints.[23] During her Fifty Shades of Grey series, Blackery also began uploading comedy vlogs, inspired by Shane Dawson and Dan Howell.[24] One of her most viewed videos to date is "My Thoughts on Google+", a comedy song complaining about the site's integration with YouTube.[25][26]
  • BirdyBoots - Current gaming channel, created January 2015.
  • Vloggery - Currenty vlogging and lifestyle channel, created August 2016.

Blackery has also operated a number of YouTube channels that have since become defunct:

  • Pink Fluffy Hat Time - Blackery's first YouTube channel which has since been discontinued.
  • These Silent Seas - Music channel created in July 2011 that has been inactive since November 2011.
  • emmaforthewin - Vlogging and music channel that first hosted videos from March 2012, inactive since August 2013.
  • BlackeryTV - Discontinued second channel originally intended to host material supplementary to her main channel emmablackery.
  • LazyLittleMe - Beauty channel run in collaboration with Cherry Wallis that has since been discontinued.
  • EmmaFailsAtGaming - Discontinued gaming channel, created 2013.
  • boxesoffoxes - Beauty and lifestyle channel created in August 2014 that has been inactive since February 2016. It was briefly rebranded as "emmablackery vlogs" in June 2016 but was later abandoned in favour of her Vloggery channel.

Personal life

Blackery lives a vegan lifestyle and is diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome.[27]

In 2014, she started a fundraiser for multiple charities, shaving her head after raising a total of £26,101.[28] In December 2015, she successfully campaigned for Liberty in North Korea to receive $25,000 in funding from the annual Project for Awesome.[29]

Between 2013 and 2016, Emma was in a romantic relationship with YouTuber Luke Cutforth. They have since remained close friends.[30]
