Felis margarita harrisoni is a subspecies of the sand cat known as the Arabian sand cat that is native to the deserts of the Arabian peninsula and Jordan.[1][2] Between July 2000 and September 2001, it was also recorded in the central Syrian desert, close to the ruins of Palmyra.[3]

Several sand cats were recorded in the western region of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi between April and December 2015, after an absence of sightings for ten years.[4]

The captive population kept in European zoos is offspring of 18 founders.[5]
