Summary

Description
English: Horseguards Building on Whitehall, London.

Horseguards, elegant and balanced in its design, was completed by John Vardy two years after its original architect William Kent died in 1748.

Kent's design was heavily influenced by the need to harmonise with the popular Admiralty Building next door which, on its completion in 1725, set the standard for mid and late 18th century Whitehall architecture.

Before its construction, the Palace of Whitehall used to hold tournaments in what is now the Parade grounds during the reign of Henry VIII and was also the arena for many of Queen Elizabeth I's birthday celebrations.
