Description

Historiated initial for the "S" of Salvum me fac Deus quoniam intraverunt aquae usque ad animam meam Infixus sum in limum profundi et non est substantia veni in altitudines maris et tempestas demersit me, the beginning of Psalm 69 ("Save me, O God; for the waters are come in unto my soul. I sink in deep mire, where there is no standing: I am come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me"). Early fifteenth century English vulgate from the Royal Collection, with illuminated miniatures by 8 different artists from the school of Herman Scheerre of Cologne. It is widely believed to be the Biblia Magna ("Big" or "Great Bible") of Henry IV, bequeathed in his will to his son and successor Henry V.
