Summary

Description
English: Ainu is spoken at varying levels of fluency by an unknown number of people, primarily among the roughly 15,000 members of the Ainu culture, an indigenous community of northern Japan. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Ainu speakers faced harsh persecution by the state, with legislation forbidding their language's use in the public sphere, including education. As a consequence, only 10 native speakers remain. Nevertheless, a lively revitalization movement has emerged among younger generations, with rising numbers of L2 speakers, and an Ainu-language magazine in circulation since 1997. ENGLISH:

Thank you, everyone. My name is Teruyo Usa. I run an Ainu restaurant called Harukor. In addition, I also participate in a club called Yairenka. The meaning [of Yairenka] is "happy" or "joy". Anyway, we all [in the club] enjoy singing and dancing, and we participate in activities to introduce the fascinating Ainu culture to many people.

I would like to keep the connection of history and culture that has been built by our predecessors for the future.
