Eugene Oliver Cockrell (born June 10, 1934) is a former American football offensive tackle who played three seasons with the New York Titans of the American Football League. He was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the 28th round of the 1957 NFL Draft. He first enrolled at the University of Oklahoma before transferring to Hardin–Simmons University. Cockrell attended Pampa High School in Pampa, Texas.[1] He was also a member of the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League.[2] He was inducted into the Texas Panhandle Sports Hall of Fame in 2010.[3]
College caareer
University of Oklahoma
Cockrell first played college football for the Oklahoma Sooners. He left the University due to his job as a professional on the rodeo circuit.[3]
Hardin–Simmons University
Cockrell re-enrolled in school to play for the Hardin–Simmons Cowboys after concluding, with the help of Sammy Baugh, that he should return to college.[3]
Professional career
Cockrell was selected by the Cleveland Browns with the 330th pick in the 1957 NFL Draft.[1]
Saskatchewan Roughriders
Cockrell played in twelve games for the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 1957.[2]
New York Titans
Cockrell played for the New York Titans from 1960 to 1962.[1]
