The Goldador, also known as Golden Lab, is a hybrid dog that is the product of breeding a purebred Golden Retriever with a purebred Labrador Retriever.[5][6] Bred for its ability to serve as guide, search-and-rescue, and drug-detection dogs, the Goldador is growing in popularity as a social and easily trained dog.[7]

Just like the Labrador, the Goldador has a short double coat that can range in variety of colors and does not require a grooming regimen.[8] The Goldador is a large, athletic dog, it measures 54 to 60 cm tall at the top of the withers and normally weighs 60 to 80 pounds.[9][10] This type of dog can be smart and sensitive enough to work with anti-narcotics and bomb detection squads.[11] The name ''Goldador'' is a portmanteau from the word ''golden'' and ''Labrador'', in the names of the parent breeds, Goldadors are also called glabs.[12]

Dogs, such as goldadors, that are created from two existing dog breeds is called designer dogs, since that they were invented or designed by people.[12]

History

First introduced as a designer dog over a decade ago, the Goldador was bred when breeders decided to cross Golden Retrievers with Labrador Retrievers.[13][14]

Traits

Colour

Generally, a Goldador's coat color ranges from yellow to gold to reddish gold, but because it is a crossbreed, it can sometimes inherit a black coat but rarely dark brown. The coat may be long and silky like that of a Golden Retriever, or may be shorter in the style of the Labrador Retriever.[15] The Goldador often has a noticeable "racing stripe" along its spine that is a little darker than the rest of its coat.

Size

The Goldador is a medium-sized dog with size and build range of a purebred Labrador Retriever or Golden Retriever, its weight can grow on average between 60 to 80 lb (27 to 36 kg).[16] Heights wise the Goldador can reach up to 2 feet (0.61 m) tall at the shoulders.[16]

Health

Goldadors, like Golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers, do not have as many health issues as most designer breeds.[17] Although hybrids have a reputation of having fewer health issues, Golden Retriever and Labrador Retrievers have some significant health problems that can be common within their breeds.[18]

Some of the common health problems of the Goldador include hip and elbow joint arthritis, the dog will also have problems with their eyes eventually.[19] the Goldador may inherit any of the health issues that is in its parent breeds.[20]
