Gumtree.com.au is a free classified advertising service in Australia offered by Gumtree, a subsidiary of eBay that offers classified advertising in several countries. Gumtree is the No 1 local classifieds in Australia, the United Kingdom, and South Africa, the Netherlands' Marktplaats, Loquo in Spain and Mobile.de in Germany according to Reuters.[3]

Gumtree was the most searched for brand in Australia in 2012 according to Google’s 2012 Australian Brand Zeitgeist Report.[4]

History

Gumtree was founded in March 2000 by Michael Pennington and Simon Crookall as a community site in London to help Australians, New Zealanders and South Africans find a place to stay, a job, and everything needed to settle in, including furniture and new friends. In 2005 Gumtree became part of the eBay Classifieds Group.

Gumtree.com.au was launched in January 2007 and in 2012 Gumtree Australia broke through 1 million live ads on the site for the first time. In 2005 Gumtree became part of the eBay Classifieds Group.[2] In 2013 Gumtree Australia launched its blog (http://blog.gumtree.com.au).

In The Media

In 2013, Gumtree Australia created the Gumtree Garden, a pop-up bar designed by Award-winning interior designer Dana Tomic-Hughes from Yellowtrace. The Gumtree Garden was designed to showcase locally source pre-loved goods and transform them into one-of-a-kind pieces. 2011 MasterChef Australia finalist, Hayden Quinn, designed the menu for the Gumtree Garden.[5]

On June 9, 2014, it was reported in the U.K based Daily Mail, that a 32-year-old Sydney man whose two year marriage ended when his wife ran off with a close friend, put her wedding dress for sale on gumtree.com.au. The dress was advertised as 'harlot-sized' and ideal for an 'deceitful, double-crossing' harlot. The ad received more than 4015 hits on Gumtree.[6]

Social Media

Gumtree Australia has an extensive social media presence with 293,530[when?] and 10,100[when?] followers respectively on both Facebook and Twitter. Gumtree is also present across YouTube, Google Plus and Pinterest.

Gumtree Roadshow

Gumtree Roadshow is a corporate social responsibility project by Gumtree Australia. In 2014, Gumtree hired stylists to refurnish and redecorate at the Caretakers Cottage Bondi youth refuge.[7]
