HM Prison Berwyn Welsh: ['bɛrwɪn]) is a planned £212 million Category C men's prison which is being built in Wrexham County Borough, Wales.

The 2,100 capacity prison is due to open in 2017 and will be located at the Wrexham Industrial Estate on the outskirts of Wrexham. It will be operated by Her Majesty's Prison Service[1] although 34% of services will be outsourced.[2] It is hoped that 1,000 jobs will be created upon opening[3] Work started on the prison in May 2015.[4] and recruitment of staff began at the end of October that year.[5]

The prison's governor has been appointed. The governor is Russ Trent[6] and until opening of the prison he will serve as project director.[7] One of Trent's first roles as governor was to give the prison its official name which was revealed on 17 February 2016 as HMP Berwyn.[8]

Name

The prison's name was announced by Governor Trent on 17 February 2016. The name Berwyn comes from the elements of Middle Welsh barr (head) and gwyn (white). A spokesperson for the National Offender Management Service (NOMS) said that the prison had been named after the Welsh mountain range.[9] Other names considered include Bridgeway, Marcher, Cerrig Tan, Dee Vale and Whittlesham.[10] These names were suggested by local schools, communities and historical societies.[11]
