Hamlet Mkhitaryan (Armenian: Համլետ Մխիթարյան, Russian: Гамлет Мхитарян; born 14 September 1962 in Yerevan - died 2 May 1996[1]) was a Soviet and Armenian professional football player before his untimely passing in 1996. He was the biggest star of Ararat Yerevan in the Soviet league during the 1980s, scoring 46 goals for the club.

His son Henrik Mkhitaryan is an Armenian football player who currently plays attacking midfielder for the Armenian national team and for German side Borussia Dortmund.

At the beginning of the 1990s, Mkhitaryan Sr moved to France, where he helped the now defunct Valence to be promoted to the second division. That’s where Henrikh spent his early childhood. Tragically, Hamlet Mkhitaryan died of a brain tumor at just 33, and never witnessed his heir developing into an outstanding footballer.

He was not to be confused with, and no relation to, Hamlet Mkhitaryan, another Armenian footballer from the same era.
