The history of rugby union matches between Argentina and Ireland is one of a very even contest. As of October 2015, the sides have met twenty one times with a result of twelve wins to Ireland, eight to Argentina and one drawn game, however, five of these matches were not a fully test capped match for Ireland. At the end of the 2010 Autumn Internationals there was only a nineteen-point difference in cumulative points scored. The largest winning margin of 23 points was recorded in the meeting of their 2015 Rugby World Cup quarterfinal, when Argentina won by 43 points to 20. However, Argentina have yet to beat Ireland on Irish soil, and Ireland have only won twice in Argentina. Ireland's first win against Argentina was in 1952, however it was only a capped match for Argentina.[1] Ireland's first fully test capped match win in Argentina came in 2014.

The five matches played between 1952 and 1973 are not regarded as full internationals by Ireland, only by Argentina. In the fifteen matches since 1990 which are counted as full internationals by both sides, Argentina have won five times and Ireland ten times.

There have been four encounters at the Rugby World Cup:

  1. In 1999, Argentina won 28–24 in a playoff for one of the last three quarterfinal spots, both teams having come second in their respective pools.
  2. In 2003, Ireland beat Argentina 16–15 in a pool match.
  3. In 2007, Argentina beat Ireland 30–15 on their way to winning Pool D.
  4. In 2015, Argentina beat Ireland 43–20 in their quarterfinal encounter.
