Sybil's Cave

Sybil's Cave is a cave in Hoboken, New Jersey that is buried at the bottom of the Stevens Institute of Technology hill, near the Castle Point Skate Park. It has had many legends and stories told about it for over 100 years. It opened in 1832, was shut in the 1880s and was filled up with dirt and concrete during the 1930s. The mayor of Hoboken, David Roberts, now has plans to excavate the site and recreate the archway that once stood in front of the cave. A historic marker explaining the cave's history is also supposed to be put in place.

Edgar Allan Poe used a real event that ocurred in 1841 at Sybil's cave as a basis for one of his stories. Around this time period, Sybil's Cave was major attraction. Also around this time period, the Elysian Fields existed, and the first game of baseball was played in Hoboken.
