The principal at IHS is Dr. Rod Kimble (see at school website external link). He became the principal after being forced out of Franklin High School in 2008 due to a freak gasoline fight accident. He is accompanied by four other assistant prinicpals. The four assistant principals are Kirk Cameron, Jennifer Aniston, Curtis Mayfield and, well, a Giant Oyster (God knows how they got away with that one). Kirk Cameron assists with the 9th grade, Jennifer Aniston with 10th, Curtis Mayfield with 11th and the Giant Oyster with 12th. |

Students at IHS generally take six academic classes, a study hall, and a lunch period which is way too short for any normal person to have time to eat. Generally allotted a time interval of close to half an hour for eating, the students are famished and starved, resulting in lower scores on standardized tests. There are three class levels available: Standard, Honors, AP. Any given class may be offered in just one or any combination of these levels. Homerooms meet on select Fridays. |

Independence High School is a 9-12 high school in Thompson's Station, Tennessee. The school opened in 2004, initially with only a freshman and sophomore class. The junior class was added in the second year and the senior class in the third. The first class of seniors graduated on May 26, 2007. The second class, which was the first to complete all 4 years at Independence, graduated May 24, 2008.

Athletics
Independence High School is a member of the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association, the governing body of Tennessee high school athletics, and competes in all TSSAA sponsored sports: baseball, basketball, bowling, cross country, football, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track & field, volleyball, and wrestling.
Additionally, IHS competes in several non-TSSAA club sports: hockey, ultimate frisbee, lacrosse, rugby, and swimming. Several of these club sports are joint ventures with other nearby schools.
Achievements
Kathy Kroeger became Independence's first national champion in December 2006 when she won the Foot Locker National Cross Country Championship with a time of 17:29.[3] Kathy Kroeger signed with Stanford University, in 2009, to be on their track and cross country team. There are also many others that have gone from IHS to collegiate level sports. Johnny Kuchar signed with Cumberland University in 2008 to play basketball. Scott Pettigrew and Isaac Baugh both signed with the University of Buffalo to play football, in 2008. In 2009 Josh Helton signed with Belmont University to be on their track and cross country team. Blake Carden signed with Trevecca Nazarene University in 2009 to be a part of the basketball team. In 2010 Josh Lee signed with Vanderbilt University to play baseball. Also, Ford Wilson signed with the University of Memphis to play baseball. Aubrey Black and Kristen Johnson both signed to participate in athletics at Trevecca Nazarene University, in 2010. Aubrey signed for soccer and Kristen signed for volleyball (listed in athletics section). Brittany Woods signed with Belmont University to be a part of their track and field team. Nick Dykes signed to play soccer at East Tennessee State University and Blake Farmer signed with Carson Newman College to also be on the soccer team.
Forensics
The Independence High School Forensics team is captained by Nick Lotz. The head coach is Tadd Himelrick. The team won first place in the State in Interp Theatre in 2010, with notable cast members including Jon Castro and Chelsea Leroy. Emily Sloane won first place in Costume Design at State that same year. The team is in both the National Forensic League and the Tennessee High School Speech and Drama League. The team enjoys regular success at a multitude of local tournaments ranging in location from Memphis,TN to Knoxville,TN, and even Kentucky.
Debate
The debate team continues to grow in their success. Former captain Mary Glenn Mellor advanced to nationals in Congress in 2009. The team remains successful with eleven members and has enjoyed high placement at local tournaments, with team members advancing to quarter finals at state in 2010. They also regularly enjoy big wins at the prestigious Smokey Mountain Invitational, winning third place sweepstakes and extensive individual awards in 2011. Lindsey Hancock and Nick Lotz placed third in public forum debate at the 2011 National Qualifying Tournament, Hancock placed third at the 2011 National Congress Qualifiers, and Lotz advanced to Nationals in Extemporaneous Speaking that same year. Both were coached by Jackie Zigelsky, who was honored as Coach of the Year at the 2011 Smokey Mountain Invitational. The team is entering its first year under new coach Brant Chesser and current captain Nick Lotz.
