John Campbell Barker (born 1980) is a Texas lawyer. He is Deputy Solicitor General of Texas and is a nominee to be a United States District Judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas.[1]
Biography
Barker earned his Bachelor of Science from Texas A&M University, summa cum laude, and his Juris Doctor from the University of Texas School of Law with highest honors.
Upon graduation from law school, he served as a law clerk to Judges William C. Bryson and John M. Walker Jr. of the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, respectively. After his clerkships, he served as a Special Assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia on detail from the Department of Justice's Criminal Division for four years and then practiced intellectual property law at Yetter Coleman LLP.
He is currently Deputy Solicitor General of Texas under Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, in which he helps to represent the state of Texas before federal and state courts in civil and criminal actions.[2]
Nomination to district court
On January 23, 2018, President Trump nominated Barker to the seat on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas vacated by Judge Leonard Davis, who retired on May 15, 2015.[2][3] On May 9, 2018 a hearing on his nomination was held before the Senate Judiciary Committee.[4] On June 7, his nomination was voted out of committee by a vote of 11–10. [5] His nomination is now pending before the full United States Senate.
