Jagathala is a panchayat town in The Nilgiris district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

Demographics

As of 2011 India census,[1] Jegathala had a population of 14,383. Males constitute 49% of the population and females 51%. Jegathala has an average literacy rate of 79%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 86%, and female literacy is 73%. In Jegathala, 9% of the population are under 6 years of age.

Jegathala is one of the panchayat towns in Nilgiris, located at an altitude of 1,850 m above sea level. It is 5 km from Coonoor and 13 km from Ooty.

The village is known for its temple being surrounded on all four sides. The main festivals celebrated here are Hetthai Habba, Thear Habba (Chariot), Neelamariamman (navarathri festival), and Deva Habba.

This village is very famous for our Indian National Game Hockey. The village has produced a lot of national players and couple of International players in this sport. J R Natarajan has represented Indian National Hockey Team from 1999-2002 and Ganesh has represented Indian National Junior Hockey Team. They are the Hockey Champions of The Nilgiris district. Football is another important sport that is played here.
