Template:Korean name Jeongdo Hong (born 1977) is a president and CEO of Joongang Media Network (JMnet) [2] in South Korea, which has 37 subsidiaries and 26 brands of media platforms including newspapers, TV stations, magazines and a multiplex cinema Megabox chain. He is also serving president and CEO of JoongAng Ilbo, one of the major Korean daily newspapers with the circulation of 1,300,000 copies(as of 2011) and JTBC, a reincarnation of Tongyang Broadcasting Company (TBC), which was Korea’s top private broadcasting network in the 1960s and 70s.
In 2005 Hong joined JMnet as a member of Strategic Planning Office. Since then, he has developed overall corporate strategies for the leading media group.
Early life
Hong studied history at Yonsei University and He received a bachelor's degree in Economics from Wesleyan University (USA), and his MBA from Stanford University (USA).
CEO of a global media group
After Hong joined JMnet in 2005, he started a several development of Joongang Ilbo, changing the newspaper’s printing format to the Berliner, the first such innovative change in all of Asia. Now he is a president & CEO of the paper.[3]
In 2011, Mr. Hong led a successful merger and acquisition of two major movie theater franchises, Megabox and Cinus, now as Megabox. The M&A bore fruit by strengthening JMnet’s position in the entertainment industry.
Mr. Hong continued to play a crucial role in JMnet’s most important project in Korea’s recent media history. It was the regaining of broadcasting rights for a company which was confiscated by the military regime in the 1970s. In December 2011, nationwide TV channel JTBC was finally launched. The channel offers news, documentaries, dramas and a variety of entertainment programs. Since then, he has focused more of his time and energy on the operations of JTBC, and now serves as the CEO of the broadcaster.
In 2000s, JoongAng Ilbo has expanded into a comprehensive and all-round media group, which is called JMnet(JoongAng Media Network). JMnet has achieved vertical integration from content production to content distribution by operating newspapers (JoongAng Ilbo, JoongAng Sunday, IS Ilgan Sports, Korea JoongAng daily), broadcasting channels (JTBC, JTBC2, JTBC Golf, etc), publishing, magazine (Forbes Korea) and entertainment sectors. JMnet is the only media group that runs such a diverse portfolio in Korea. With over 2,500 employees, its vision is to become a global media group that represents an Asian voice and an Asian perspective.[citation needed]
Global Activities
Mr. Hong is a member of the WAN-IFRA (World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers) Asia Pacific Committee and has been named the WEF’s (World Economic Forum) Young Global Leader. He also joined WEF’s Global Agenda Council.
