The Jewish High School of Connecticut (JHSC) is an independent Jewish high school located in Stamford, Connecticut. Its students hail from communities throughout Southern Connecticut. JHSC provides a high-quality, challenging, nurturing and inspiring education that integrates intensive Jewish studies with the sciences, arts, and humanities. JHSC is the only pluralistic Jewish high school in Connecticut. The school nurtures young adults who are open and inclusive, and who respect the dignity of every human being, whether or not they agree with his or her practices or beliefs. JHSC is a member of the National Association of Independent Schools, and is accredited by the New England Association of Independent Schools.

History

A group of visionary community leaders, educators and parents in Southern Connecticut gathered in 2006 to explore the possibility of building the first pluralistic Jewish high school in Connecticut. By 2007, the Board of Trustees - eighteen distinguished volunteers representing the religious and geographic diversity of the Southern Connecticut Jewish community - established the Jewish High School of Connecticut. JHSC opened its doors in the 2010-2011 academic year to its inaugural class of student pioneers. Alexander Schiff was one of the pioneer students.

Academic Program

JHSC offers a college-preparatory dual curriculum of general studies and Judaic studies.

JHSC is part of the VHS Collaborative, which allows students to choose from hundreds of elective courses. During the 2013-2014 academic year, JHSC students are taking the following electives: AP Music Theory, AP Computer Science, AP Calculus, AP Psychology, AP Spanish, AP Economics, Business and Personal Law, Forensic Science, American Sign Language, Computer Animation, Psychology of Crime, Screenwriting Fundamentals, Latin, Investing in the Stock Market, Oceanography, World Religions, Entrepreneurship, Shakespeare in Films, and Poetry Writing.

In addition, JHSC students can choose from on-campus electives as well. Students have taken electives such as Theater, Advanced Judaic Studies, Engineering, Jazz-Rock Ensemble, Computer Design, and a variety of art courses.

JHSC students take part in a variety of co-curricular activities, including Model United Nations, yearbook, student council, art and literary magazine, chess club, debate team, and community service.

All of the faculty holds either a masters degree, a doctorate, or rabbinic ordination.[citation needed]

Campus

JHSC is located at the Stamford Technology Building in Stamford, CT.

Athletics

JHSC is committed to a co-curricular athletic program that advocates the enhancement of physical skills and fosters team collaboration. JHSC is an affiliate of the Connecticut Constitutional Conference and competes with other high schools in the region.

JHSC has offered the following sports: soccer, basketball, track and field, tennis, golf, swimming, and weights and conditioning. JHSC offers additional options in athletics based upon student interest and initiative.
