Karim Khalili (Persian: کریم خلیلی) is the current chairman of the Afghan High Peace Council[1] and the former Vice President of Afghanistan in the administration of President Hamid Karzai.[2] Khalili was appointed first time as Vice President in 2002 and was elected as running mate of Hamid Karzai in 2004. Since 1989 he has been one of the main leaders of the Wahdat political party of Hazara.[3]
Early years
Khalili was born in Wardak Province and attended a religious school. He participated in the Afghanistan resistance during Soviet Invasion. He also served as Minister of Finance of Afghanistan during the Mujahideen government in the early 1990s.
