Kelamangalam is a panchayat town in Krishnagiri district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

Geography

Kelamangalam is located at 12°36′N 77°51′E / 12.6°N 77.85°E / 12.6; 77.85.[1] It has an average elevation of 810 metres (2657 feet). Average temperature lingers around 20-25°C. The soil here is laterite. Around 60 percent of people live on farming. This town is situated in an edge of Tamil Nadu. The nearest state-borders to this town are Karnataka(Athibele(or)Athipalli - 16 Kilometers) & Andhra Pradesh(Kuppam - 90 Kilometers).

Demographics

As of 2011 India census,[2] Kelamangalam had a population of 11,052. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Kelamangalam has an average literacy rate of 61%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 67%, and female literacy is 55%. In Kelamangalam, 15% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Kelamangalam has a Govt.Hr.Sec School(Tamil & English Medium), Govt.Girls High School(Tamil & English Medium), Govt.High School(Telugu Medium). Apart from the Govt.Schools, It has 5 private English medium schools. "Arul Nursery & Primary School" is the oldest among them (From 1983).

Kelamangalam has a Govt.Hospital, Panchayat Union Office, Police Station, Railway station, Post office, 3 Banks, 1 theatre & 3 Petrol stations. It has 2 temples, 2 churches & 3 Masjids. On every Sunday the farmers & merchants will gather at one place(சந்தை).

The People of this town generally knows to speak in minimum 3-4 languages (Tamil, Telugu, Kannada & Hindi). Telugu is the majority language in the town followed by Tamil , which is the official language. As per 2001 census the number of speakers mother tongue wise as follows : Telugus 4,083 followed by Tamils 3,683 , Urdu 1,835 , Kannadigas 1,360 speakers[3]

Tourist/Pilgimage

Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Nagamangalam

This is a Pilgrimage Place for Roman Catholic church. The first miraculous water that gushed out at one and a half feet on 19-5-2008.

Pilgrim Centre

Rev father Joy Onnuukkalle OSB, TVE father Henri Bonai MEP Vicar of St Mary's church Royakottai and Mr Perniyanayakam, a traditional Christian devotee from Kalamangalam, gathered together in this J.G farm to discuss about the chapel which they had started in the name of OUR LADY OF LOURDES.
