Managerial career

Cullis' brief managerial career at the professional level came when he was appointed manager of Third Division Swansea City on 8 February 1996 by prospective new chairman Michael Thompson. He had never played professional football and his only previous management experience was as the coach of non-league club Cradley Town,[1] then of the West Midlands (Regional) League Premier Division, and based at Cradley in the Black Country.

Cullis managed Swansea City for just two games: a 1–0 home defeat to league leaders Swindon Town and four days later a 4-0 away defeat to second placed Blackpool following the game Cullis became a pawn in the power struggle between incoming chairman Michael Thompson and outgoing chairman Doug Sharpe following talks between Cullis and ex Liverpool midfielder and Danish International Jan Molby whom Cullis wished to appoint as player coach. Thompson refused to sanction the appointment and Cullis resigned shortly afterwards. Four days later Thompson withdrew his support for the club and Sharpe regained control appointing Molby as manager in the process and taking all the credit even though it was Cullis who had attracted Molby to the club.[2]
