Kiss of Life (Korean: 키스 오브 라이프; RR: Kiseu Obeu Laipeu; stylized in all caps) is a South Korean girl group formed in 2023, consisting of Julie, Natty, Belle and Haneul. Formed by S2 Entertainment, the group made their official debut on July 5, 2023 with the EP Kiss of Life.

Name

The group's name, which was conceived from words with the meaning of 'breathing' and 'vitality', contains the ambition to "breathe a new breath into the music industry with music and charm."[1]

History

Pre-debut

Natty was a participant in 2015 Mnet reality survival program Sixteen where she was pitted against 15 other trainees from JYP Entertainment to secure a spot in the label's next girl group, later revealed to be named Twice. However, she was eliminated in the final round, thus continuing as a trainee under the label.[2] In 2017, Natty participated in Mnet reality survival program Idol School to compete with 40 other contestants for an opportunity to debut in a 9-member girl group, later revealed to be named Fromis 9. However, she was eliminated from the potential debut group in which she ranked 13th in final episode. In 2020, Natty signed with Swing Entertainment.[3] She officially debuted as a soloist with the release of her debut single album Nineteen on May 7 along with its accompanying music video.[4] On July 12, 2022, Natty had signed an exclusive contract with S2 Entertainment.[5] Belle, a former SM Entertainment trainee, was known as both the daughter of Korean veteran singer Shim Shin [ko] and for taking part in composing and writing songs for several acts such as Le Sserafim with "Unforgiven", Purple Kiss, and Miyeon.[6] She also participated on the background vocals of Mark's "Child".[7] Julie was a trainee under The Black Label.[8]

On December 27, 2022, it was announced that S2 Entertainment was preparing to launch a new girl group in 2023.[9] Later in February 2023, it was discovered that the agency has applied to trademark 'KISS OF LIFE', and that they had opened SNS accounts with the same name for the girl group.[10][11]

2023–present: Debut with Kiss of Life

On May 12, 2023, S2 Entertainment opened up SNS accounts and dropped the first teaser for the group. In the teaser, it was revealed that the group would debut in July of the same year.[12] The members were revealed in pairs from May 15 to 18 (in order: Natty, Belle, Julie and Haneul).[13][14][15][16] On May 26, Lee Hae-in was confirmed to be the creative director of the group.[17] On June 12, a teaser was released, revealing that the group will debut on July 5 with their first EP Kiss of Life.[18] The members's solo pre-released music video was released in pairs from June 18 to 21 (in order: "Sugarcoat" by Natty, "Countdown" by Belle, "Kitty Cat" by Julie, and "Play Love Games" by Haneul).[19][20][21][22] On June 27, the music video of a b-side of the EP, "Bye My Neverland", was released.[23] On July 3, the official music video teaser for the official debut track "Shhh" was released.[24] On July 5, they officially debuted with the release of the EP and music video for the debut single "Shhh". They also held a press showcase at Yes24 Live Hall in Gwangjin-gu, Seoul on the afternoon of the same day.[25]
