Kolkata Gate[1] The Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (Hidco) is working to set up the Kolkata Gate at New Town on the main arterial road. Welding work is now going on. Officials said that the two smaller arcs will be lifted and aligned to the arcs already in place to complete the viewers' gallery ring. Two of the four arcs constituting the ring have already been erected, each weighing about 65 metric tonne. Officials said that the authorities have been working round the clock through the nights of Friday and Saturday. The visitors gallery and restaurant will be surrounded by glass , which will be part of the wall. From where you see a lot of parts of New Town , Rajarhat and Kolkata . [2] It is a type of Welcome gate and is built by HIDCO, under the government of West Bengal. The design was finalised by calling for submission of designs through a public notice in web sites as well as newspaper advertisements. A committee headed by Architect Dulal Mukherjee was formed which evaluated the designs from various architects from around the country. The design by M/s Vector Designs, a Pune-based architecture firm was recommended by the committee. A work order will soon be issued now that the design has been accepted by the Board of Directors of Hidco. I have asked Vector Designs to submit a time-table too so that we will know when the construction will start after going through the formalities of BOQ, RFQ, RFP, LOI etc.

Construction

Kolkata Gate at Rabindra Tirtha Crossing

West Bengal chief minister, Mamata Banerjee designed the Kolkata Gate. This design was made public in 2015. [3] The construction of the Gate started on 6 March 2017. The construction of the Gate will use around 70 tons of steel . The total cost of the construction of the Gate is expected to be around ₹25 crore. [4][5][6]

Specification

This gate will be about 55 meters high. The monotonous tunnel made for the viewers will be approximately 25 meters above the ground. Visitors can climb up the lifts on one side of the Gate. Decorating the tunnels will be several photographs of the Bengal culture, with adaptation. The outer part of the entire tunnel will be have lighting. The logo "Welcome to Kolkata" will be put up on the ring structure to greet the incoming vehicles.

This hanging restaurant is being developed as a part of Newtown's beauty project. From the idea of Visitor's Gallery in Paris's Eiffel Tower and hanging restaurant in Malaysia and HIDCO has built this gate and hanging restaurant. Firhad Hakim, the Minister of the Urban and Urban Development said- This arrangement was a pleasure for the common man.
