Lanier County High School is a high school in Lakeland, Georgia, United States. The school is part of the Lanier County School District, which serves Lanier County.[3]
LCHS serves grades 9-12.
Athletics
Lanier County High School participates in most major sports, including football, baseball, and basketball. The 1992 men's track and field team and the 1955 men's basketball team won the GHSA State Championship. Lanier County is known for their basketball program having been dominant mostly in recent years. In 2009, the Bulldogs Malick Kone, Junior Gnonkonde, Teddy Somolo, and Emmanuel Ezoua found themselves deep in the state playoffs, making it to the GHSA State Final Four in 2012 against Whitefield Academy (Atlanta).
Baseball has been a big part of Lanier County sports as well. Former players include Coach John White (one of the most successful baseball coaches in the state), Alex Lee, Grafton Kent, Chris Studstill, Ethan Mccrae, Derek White, BJ Lucky, Austin Cook, Ryan White, Nathan Bass, Jordan Patten, and Josh Fender. The Bulldogs had one of their most successful seasons in 2008 as they crushed through the regular season on the way to a playoff run. Ryan White had one of the most dominant pitching performances against Schley County (Ellaville) as he gave up one hit in 9 innings to seal a 2-1 victory in game 2 of the series. Later in game 3, Josh Fender hit the game-winning "walk off" grand slam to seal the victory by a score of 24-5 in just 3 innings, sending the Bulldogs to the State Elite 8 for the second time in three years (also in 2005) to face Landmark Christian School (Fairburn). However, the Bulldogs came up short against the Metro Atlanta private school, ending their season.
Football came to Lanier County in 1998 and is now under the leadership of first year head coach Carl Parker (Lowndes High School, Valdosta). However, in 2006, the Bulldogs advanced to the playoffs for the first time in school history and faced Randolph-Clay High School. The head coach of the Bulldogs, Daniel MacFather, left Lanier County to coach the rival in following years. Notable Gridiron stars include Sylvester West, Demono Nelms, Greg Sealy, Devonte Flowers, Christopher Macutchin, Jeremy Ryan, Lance Davis, Domenick Calhoun, and Anthony Ethridge.
In 2012, DE Junior Gnonkonde became the first major Division 1 Football signee, as he signed with the UNC-Chapel Hill Tar Heels. Many other players have gone on to play at smaller programs such as Valdosta State University.[citation needed]
Lanier County's biggest football rival is considered by many to be the Clinch County Panthers (Homerville) and the Atkinson County Rebels (Pearson).
