Underbelly is a thirteen-part Australian television mini-series based on the real events of the 1995–2004 gangland war in Melbourne, as depicted in the book Leadbelly: Inside Australia's Underworld by Age journalists John Silvester and Andrew Rule.[1] Underbelly began screening on 13 February 2008 on the Nine Network (and affiliates) in all states and territories except Victoria, due to a court injunction. The series depicts the key players in Melbourne's criminal underworld, including the Moran family and their rival, Carl Williams. It is produced by the Australian Film Finance Corporation,[2] in association with Film Victoria,[3] and is filmed primarily in Melbourne, at locations around the city where the real-life events occurred.[4] Following the success of Underbelly, the Nine Network commissioned a second series – A Tale of Two Cities, which was then followed by The Golden Mile, Razor, Badness and Squizzy.

To avoid confusion with the other series, especially since the international release of the original, Underbelly has since been retroactively named with a subtitle and subsequently promoted as Underbelly: War on the Streets. Minor changes were made to the show for the Victorian 2011 "Uncut" broadcast in order to keep it updated, including a rerecorded final voice-over (which now includes information on Carl Williams Murder and Tony Mokbel's arrest) and the crediting of Kym Gynell as Keith Faure. This version was released on Blu-ray.
