  • Panama A magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck south of Panama on January 20 at a depth of 0.0 km.[1]
  • Japan A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck southeast of Hokkaido, Japan on March 18 at a depth of 35.0 km.[2]
  • Chile A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Atacama, Chile on March 19 at a depth of 0.0 km.[3]

April–June

  • Bulgaria A magnitude 7.5 earthquake followed shortly afterwards by a magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Blagoevgrad Province, Bulgaria on April 4 at a depth of 0.0 km.[4] There was some major damage reported.[5][6]
  • Taiwan A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck Chiayi County, Taiwan on April 24 at an unknown depth. Three people were killed, 10 were injured and 66 homes destroyed in Chiayi County.[7]
  • New Zealand A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck south of the Kermadec Islands, New Zealand on May 1 at a depth of 0.0 km.[8]
  • Indonesia A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Halmahera, Indonesia on May 1 at a depth of 0.0 km.[9]
  • Japan A magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck the Sea of Japan on June 7 at a depth of 350.0 km.[10]
  • Russia A magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck off the east coast of Kamchatka, Russia on June 25 at a depth of 0.0 km.[11] Some damage was reported.[12]
  • Russia A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck off the east coast of Kamchatka, Russia on June 25 at a depth of 0.0 km. This coming hours after the previous event means that this can be considered a doublet earthquake. Further damage was reported in the area.[13][14]
  • Russia A magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck off the east coast of Kamchatka, Russia on June 27 at a depth of 0.0 km.[15]

  • Russia A magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck off the east coast of Kamchatka, Russia on July 24 at a depth of 0.0 km.[16]
  • New Zealand A magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck east of New Zealand on August 8 at a depth of 0.0 km.[17]
  • Greece A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck Samos, Greece on August 11 at a depth of 10.0 km. Four people were killed and around 540 homes were damaged or destroyed.[18]
  • Japan A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Kyushu, Japan on August 24 at a depth of 35.0 km.[19]
  • United States A magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck Central Alaska on August 27 at a depth of 0.0 km.[20]
  • China A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck Sichuan Province, China on August 30 at a depth of 0.0 km.[21] There was around 400 deaths and major damage in the area.[22]
