State Route 118 (abbreviated SR 118) is part of Maine's system of numbered state highways, located in eastern Oxford County. It is a secondary highway running 13.04 miles (20.99 km) between the towns of Waterford and Norway. Its western terminus in Waterford is at State Route 35 and its eastern terminus in Norway is at State Route 26 and State Route 117.

Route description

SR 118 begins at an intersection with SR 35 north of Waterford, near the latter's intersection with SR 5. SR 118 departs to the east, passing through East Waterford and meeting the northern end of SR 37 before entering the town of Norway. SR 118 continues east into town, passing south of Lake Penneseewassee (Norway Lake), before meeting SR 117, which approaches from the south. SR 117 and SR 118 are then cosigned heading east into downtown Norway. Upon reaching the end of Main Street, the road intersects SR 26. The SR 118 designation ends here while SR 117 joins SR 26 northbound towards South Paris.

History

Western terminus

When it was first commissioned in 1925, SR 118 extended north along SR 5 into Bethel, ending at SR 26. When SR 35 was commissioned in the early 1930s, SR 118 was cosigned with it and a portion of modern SR 5 into Bethel. In 1938, SR 118 was truncated to its current terminus in Waterford, eliminating both overlaps and cutting the route's overall length by more than half.

Eastern terminus

For over 50 years, SR 118 terminated in Norway at its intersection with SR 117 near Lake Penneseewassee. Sometime in the 1980s, SR 118 was cosigned along SR 117 through downtown to its current terminus at SR 26, extending the designation 2 miles (3.2 km) to the east.[1]
