Marko Gobeljić (Serbian Cyrillic: Марко Гобељић; born 13 September 1992) is a Serbian footballer, who plays for Red Star Belgrade.[1]

Club career

Sloga Kraljevo

2010–11 season: First team breakthrough

Born in Kraljevo, Marko started training football with local football school Bubamara 1991,[5] and later passed all youth categories of Sloga Kraljevo. He had started playing with the first team as a bonus player in 2010–11 season. For debut season he played on 27 league caps and 1 Lav Cup Serbia match, against Red Star Belgrade played in front of a full Kraljevo City Stadium on 22 September 2010. He was one of players in starting eleven on that match.[6] He played a solid match, as an other players and played an equally until the end of match, but in finish prevailed an experience of Red-whites.[7] Previously, he noted appearance in Lav Cup zero fixture match, when Sloga made a home win with result 2:1 versus Radnički Niš on 1 September 2010 and qualified for match with Red Star Belgrade.[8] At the beginning of his senior career, he was mostly used as a midfielder, but he also appeared as a right-back in some matches during the spring half-season, after Jovica Vasilić left the club.[9]

2011–12 season: Fully senior

For the 2011–12 season, Gobeljić entered with a year of senior experience. After the club promoted in the First League, he was mostly used playing in the first squad, and ended season with 3 goals on 31 league caps. He played mostly matches on central midfield position, but he also appeared as a right-back in some matches. At home 1–2 defeat against Čukarički, he played on stopper place, after Boban Dmitrović had been substituted out at the half-time. Previously he scored a goal on the same game.[10] Later, during the competition, he scored two more goals in matches against Proleter Novi Sad and OFK Mladenovac.[11]

2012–13 season: Most capped player

During the 2012–13 season, Gobeljić spent most caps playing as central midfielder, until coach Neško Milovanović moved him on right-back before the end of season. He was the most standard player of the season, making 32 First League[12] and 1 cup appearance against OFK Beograd at Omladinski Stadium, when Sloga lost with 5:0 result.[13][14] He did not score a goal, but he was nominated for the man of the match once time.[2]

2013–14 season: Lidership & captaincy

For the first fixture of new competition, Gobeljić started in slightly lower form, but later his games became better and contribution to team more significant. After bad result in the first round,[15] the first team captain Aleksandar Božović dropped into the background, and more experienced Bojan Šejić replaced him on goal, Gobeljić got an armband as a vice-captain ahead of a little older Miloš Janićijević and Nemanja Miletić.[16] He was doing that very successful, making 26 appearances, the most as a captain, until Božović's returning on goal after Šejić's departure 4 rounds before the end of season, when he took an armband again. Gobeljić played the whole 15 matches for the first half of season and was the best marked player in league, without the mark under 7 in all matches. He had also a very significant role in cup match played on 25 September 2013 against Vojvodina scoring a goal for draw, and beating Žakula in penalty series. Although Sloga dropped after penalties,[17] of Sloga's captain on that match was nominated for the man of the match. He was marked with 8 as his colleague otherside, Miroslav Vulićević.[18] Although his original position is a central midfielder, he changed some positions in team and played what was need in specific occasion as an utility player. He played mostly matches as a right-back during the season, because of speed and explosive power. Teammates and supporters called him "MG7", alluding to Cristiano Ronaldo (CR7), because of his lucidity in game and number 7 on his back. Although players do not play on the same positions in teams, that comparison was more based on his lidership and motorical abilities. He has a great contribution for all 7 home wins in first half of season. Continuing of competition, he started with lower form, which became better from fixture to fixture. During the spring part of championship he made 11 appearances. He was injured at two times, on home matches. First time at home win with result 4:1 against BSK Borča on 15 March 2014[19] and second on doubtful home lost with result 1:2 against Dolina Padina on 30 April 2014[20] when he scored a goal for 1:1 draw, and then injured. After both of games, he made 1 match break. Once time he was suspended because of yellow cards, and also missed the last fixture versus Proleter in Novi Sad. The match against Borac Čačak he started from the bench, replacing Siniša Mladenović on the right-back position and immediately made a difference in game, but Borac kept the adventage from the 7 minute of match and crashed SuperLiga dreams of Kraljevo people.[21] Gobeljić ended season with high average rating 7.20 making 26 First League and 1 cup appearance and also scored 4 goals at total.[2]

Napredak Kruševac

2014–15 season: Turning professional

Gobeljić signed deal with Napredak in July 2014,[22] and took number 77 jersey. He made his Serbian SuperLiga debut for Napredak in home defeat against Čukarički on 9 August 2014, when he replaced Ibrahima Mame N'Diaye at the beginning of second half.[23] After second fixture, when he started match from the bench too, he has provide himself in starting 11 since next round. He also played cup match versus Metalac Gornji Milanovac, when Napredak lost after penalties.[24] Gobeljić assisted to Bojan Božović for goal in the first win of Napredak against Radnički Niš on 20 October 2014.[25] Former captain of Sloga Kraljevo,[26] was one of the best for the first half-season.[27] Gobeljić missed game against OFK Beograd in 18 fixture because of yellow card accumulation.[28] In a match against Mladost Lučani he was also one of better on the pitch, but he was marked by several players, and helped in defence too. He blocked one shoot,[29] before Mladost scored a goal.[30] Gobeljić was substituted out for the first time in a match against Red Star Belgrade in 20 fixture.[31] He was sitting on the bench in a home lost against Jagodina.[32] In next fixture, against Vojvodina, Gobeljić scored his first goal for Napredak, which was also a historical goal for the first Napredak's win against Vojvodina in Novi Sad.[33][34] In a match against Partizan, he had a solid role, as a right-back, he created some chances for his teammates, and he kicked on goal several times. He got the yellow card,[35] and suspension for the next match, against Donji Srem.[36] During the regular season, Gobeljić made 26 league and 1 cup appearance and scored 1 goal. Finally, he played both matches in play-off, against Metalac Gornji Milanovac, after which Napredak was relegated from the SuperLiga.[37][38]

2015–16: Team of the season

After he missed first fixture of Serbian First League because of yellow card suspension, Gobeljić returned in squad for a match against Proleter Novi Sad, and later played all matches until the end of first half season including 14 Serbian First League and 2 cup matches. He started season as a right-back, but after Igor Zonjić joined the club, he moved in midfield. During the season, he was playing on both positions. Gobeljić scored a goal in a match against ČSK Pivara, played on 19 March 2016.[39] After winning the Serbian First League and a match against Sinđelić Beograd,[40] Gobeljić got a free time and missed last two matches of the competition. He was also elected in the team of the season by Sportski žurnal, along with teammates Bojan Beljić and Ibrahima Mame N'Diaye.[41]

2016–17 season: Switching to attack position

In summer 2016, before the start of new season, Gobeljić played several friendly matches and scored two goals, against Radnički Niš in the first match played on 25 June,[42] and Radnik Surdulica in the final match of the preparation period, played on 16 July 2016.[43] He scored first goal in the 2016–17 Serbian SuperLiga season, after Miloš Vulić's assist,[44] during the first fixture away match against Red Star Belgrade, played on 22 July 2016 at the Rajko Mitić Stadium.[45] In the next fixture match, against Partizan, played at the Mladost Stadium, Bojan Šaranov fouled Gobeljić for penalty kick, which Nenad Šljivić realised.[46] Gobeljić started that match as a forward. He scored his second season goal in the 8th fixture match against Čukarički, played on 10 September 2016, when he was also nominated for man of the match and took a place in team of the fixture.[47] Gobeljić assisted to Bratislav Punoševac for win against Radnik Surdulica,[48] and also made noted his third assist in the season during the 2–0 victory against Rad for the second goal on the match, pointed by Slobodan Urošević. Several days later, both of players extended contracts until summer 2018.[49] Gobeljić also scored a goal in the next fixture match, against Novi Pazar.[50] In the 14th fixture match, against Borac Čačak, played at the Mladost Stadium, Gobeljić made new assist, for the first goal of Ibrahima Mame N'Diaye in game.[51] His fourth season goal, Gobeljić noted in a match against Partizan on 25 November 2016.[52] He also assisted to Dino Šarac in the next fixture match for 1–0 victory against Metalac Gornji Milanovac.[53] Gobeljić also scored three goals during the winter break-off season.[54] He scored his first goal on official match in 2017 in last fixture of the regular season against OFK Bačka.[55]

Red Star Belgrade

On 7 June 2017, Belgrade media reported about Gobeljić's signing with Red Star Belgrade, after his long-time friend Jovan Kastratović shared a contract photography on Instagram.[56] Gobeljić was officially promoted by club's sports director Mitar Mrkela two days later, peening a three-year contract.[57] He made his debut for new in second leg of the first qualifying round for 2017–18 UEFA Europa League, replacing Ricardo Cavalcante Mendes in 73 minute of the match against Floriana.[11] Several minutes next he joined the game, Gobeljić had been sent off after one bad tackle on the opponent player.[58] Behind the several games he was used as a back-up choice, Gobeljić started his first match on the field in 5 fixture of the 2017–18 Serbian SuperLiga season, against OFK Bačka on 13 August 2017 as a right-back.[59] Replacing injured compatriot Dušan Anđelković in the first leg of the play-off round for UEFA Europa League, Gobeljić played the rest of match against Krasnodar as a left-back.[60] He also played his first eternal derby on 27 August 2017 at the same position on the field.[61] Gobeljić scored his first goal for Red Star Belgrade in 5–0 victory over Radnik Surdulica on 29 November 2017.[62]

International career

Gobeljić was called by coach Slavoljub Muslin in the Serbia national football team in September 2016,[63] and he made his international debut in a friendly 3–0 loss to Qatar.[64] He also received a call for a friendly match against United States, on 29 January 2017.[65][66]

Style of play

Through the professional career, Gobeljić affirmed himself as an utility player.[4] He has started as a central midfielder being capable of playing left and right.[67] Playing with Sloga Kraljevo, he converted his position to right-back for a period, which he also played with Napredak Kruševac and Red Star Belgrade later.[57] He capped as a centre-back once time.[10] In his third season with Napredak, menager Dragan Ivanović moved him to attack, where he spent mostly time as a second striker[57] and wing forward.[68] Joining Red Star Belgrade, Gobeljić changed many places on the field at the beginning, including left-back[60] and defensive midfielder positions.[69]

Internationally, selector Slavoljub Muslin used him as a centre forward and attacking midfielder.[66]

In early years of the career, Gobeljić used to wear shirts 2, 8 & 11 in Serbian League West when numbers were sorted from 1 to 11.[9][8][7] Turning fully pro, he had worn 7 with Sloga Kraljevo in the Serbian First League,[26] after which he chose number 77 jersey with Napredak and Red Star.[70]

At the age of 24, Gobeljić was described as an one of the best and the most intelligent footballers in the Serbian domestic competition.[71] He is characterized by great motoric abilities and good passing skills.[72][73]
