Martin Brandon-Bravo
Martin Maurice Brandon-Bravo (Con) OBE (born 25 March 1932) is a British politician.
Career
He was Member of Parliament (MP) for Nottingham South from 1983 to 1992 when he was defeated by the Alan Simpson (Lab). In his time in Parliament he became Parliamentary Private Secretary to Home Secretary, David Waddington (1989-1990).
He was a Conservative councillor for the West Bridgford West division of Nottinghamshire County Council (NCC) from 1993, serving as Deputy Leader of the party group, until retiring at the 2009 elections. Reflective of economic or political contributions, he was appointed as an alderman of NCC in July 2009 and of the City of Nottingham in January 2012.
Sport
Brandon-Bravo was a coxswain of elite British rowing crews before becoming president of the forerunner to the present body in the sport of rowing, the Amateur Rowing Association; he is now one of three life Vice Presidents of British Rowing, which has combined professionals and amateurs in one organisation.
Personal life
He was married to Margaret, the daughter of a scrum-half at the predecessor club to Warrington Wolves, Warrington Rugby League Football Club. She helped to abolish the discrimination in the sport between manual labourers/watermen and 'amateur oarsmen'. Margaret managed for many years with her husband racing at the major events and international regattas at the Holme Pierrepont National Watersports Centre, Holme Pierrepont, Nottingham, from its opening in 1971, and the crew of Nottingham County Rowing Association nominated her as club captain temporarily in their successful re-run on the same day of the race for the misleadingly named Ladies' Challenge Plate, at Henley Royal Regatta against Harvard University, which led to her name being the only woman's name engraved upon the plate.[1]
