Mathews & Associates Architects is an architecture firm based in Pretoria, South Africa.[1] It was established in 2000 by Pieter J Mathews,[2][3] with current partners Anton Smit (from 2000) and Liam Purnell (from 2002). The firm has received numerous awards,[4][5][6] their work have been published in more than 130 articles and book entries,[6] appearing on more than 25 local television shows,[6] and they were part of the "Traces of Centuries & Future Steps" exhibition at the 2012 Venice Architecture Biennale.[4][7] They are known for contextually relevant, bold and graphically strong designs.[1]

History

The firm opened their doors in November 2000.[8] It first operated from an old post office building and specialised in the residential market.[5][9] Later the focus gradually shifted to numerous other types of buildings as well,[9] like transport, hospitality and unconventional commercial projects.[5] Currently their offices are in Nieuw Muckleneuk, Pretoria, with ten people working on projects that include buildings, graphic design and publications.
