Matt Bigland (born 8 July 1985) is an English rock musician, multi-instrumentalist and songwriter. He is best known as the founder, songwriter, and lead singer/guitarist of the alternative rock band Dinosaur Pile-Up.

Early life

Bigland was born in Kendal in 1985. Bigland's father died while Bigland was still young, so Bigland was raised by his mother in Lancashire along with his older brother. His mother and older brother influenced his music tastes with "80's pop and power ballad bands" and rock music.[1]

Mother Vulpine

In 2004, Bigland moved to Leeds and later formed Mother Vulpine in 2006. An experimental rock group consisting of Bigland, Lindsey Wilson, Tom Hudson (later of Pulled Apart By Horses) and Ben Waddleton. Mother Vulpine released 1 single under on the Bone Records which was called "Keep Your Wits Sharp (Her Words Are Quick)" in May 2007, however the band soon split towards the end of 2007. While he was in Mother Vulpine however, Bigland started to create demos of songs which he would later use for Dinosaur Pile-Up.

Dinosaur Pile-Up

In 2007 after the break up of his previous band, Mother Vulpine, Bigland started up his new group Dinosaur Pile-Up and later called in bassist Tom Dunford and drummer Steve Wilson to finish the line-up. Originally, the band was meant to be a side solo project for Matt, but when Mother Vulpine broke up, Dinosaur Pile-Up became his main priority. They then later released 2 EPs in 2009; the Traynor 7 and The Most Powerful EP in the Universe. They also were invited to go on tour with alternative rock group The Pixies on their Euro tour. Their debut album Growing Pains was released in October 2010. In 2013, the band's second studio album Nature Nurture was released prior to their US tours of 2014.[2] Currently, the "final line-up" Dinosaur Pile-Up consists of drummer Mike Sheils and bassist Jim Cratchely. Bigland, Sheils, and Cratchley all collectively created and recorded the band's most recent album, Eleven Eleven.[3]

Dinosaur Pile-Up have supported bands such as Feeder, Twin Atlantic, Cage The Elephant, Middle Class Rut, Brand New, and Weezer.
