The Mecklenburg County Sportsplex[1] is a large sports complex and park in Matthews, North Carolina, southeast of Charlotte. The complex is scheduled to open in the autumn of 2013.

History

The idea of a sports complex along the outer-belt in Matthews was first proposed in the early 21st century with the official groundbreaking taking place on May 17, 2012 following years of delays due to the global credit crunch. Originally called the Matthews Sportsplex the name was changed during construction.

Facilities

The complex will be built in stages with the first stage, scheduled to open in 2013, consisting of five sports fields (sized for international soccer), parkland, walking trails, and boardwalks.

Eventual plans call for the complex to be expanded to include a further six fields, a 5,000-capacity stadium, more parkland, and more walking trails.
