Too long and no longer accurate

[edit]

This string is too long, ends on an orphaned line, and is no longer accurate (the sticky header means a language-links icon is always available in the upper-right, so there's no point in jumping your view back to the top of the page).

old discussion

Current string:

On this Wikipedia the language links are at the top of the page across from the article title. Go to top.

Proposed string:

Language links (文A) are at the top-right of the page.

Interim proposal (close to the original, but accurate & grammatical):

Language links are at the top of the page across from the title.

I'm not sure faking the language switcher icon with unicode is a good idea for accessibility. small jars tc 18:52, 26 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The rest of the sentence describes where the menu has moved even if a screen-reader can't read those characters perfectly. I'm not sure how cleanly an image would render here, and the increase in clarity seems a fair trade for slightly less screen-reader-friendliness. Would you prefer no parenthetical? – SJ + 19:49, 28 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I'm more worried about the possibility that they would get read at all than of them being read imperfectly ("language links wen ay are at the top-right of the page.") If this can be suppressed it won’t be a problem, and I guess the message isn’t needed if you’re using a screenreader anyway. small jars tc 22:22, 4 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You might want to file a task about this in Phabricator, so that other projects and languages would also benefit from the change. Matma Rex talk 23:07, 26 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
This started as a Phab discussion: T329531. I wanted confirmation that I wasn't the only one who thought this was useful; thanks. I've created a separate task (T330805) to update the default string. – SJ + 23:11, 28 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I posted a new alternative, without approximating the interlanguage icon. – SJ + 02:34, 12 March 2023 (UTC) This simpler change applied, after discussions noted above. The phabricator discussion to simplify the default MediaWiki string remains open, w/ positive feedback, but I believe needs action by the skin team. – SJ + 19:58, 15 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Remove this sidebar section?

[edit]

It's been long enough; seems time for the 'Languages' section in the main sidebar, which now only has this message, to go away. Is there a way for individual wikis to hide that section, before it is removed altogether in V22? – SJ + 04:23, 14 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed decomissioning process:

  • Shorten message to "Language links are at the top of the page"
  • Propose hiding the language sidebar for V22 altogether: T353619

@Matma Rex and SmallJarsWithGreenLabels: thoughts? – SJ + 19:37, 8 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, file a Phab ticket. Matma Rex talk 20:57, 8 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Filed, thanks. – SJ +

RfC: Remove this sidebar section

[edit]

Proposal : Remove the "Languages" section and this message from the main menu in Vector 2022. (Ticket: T353619)

Now that the language selector has been moved to the top of the page in Vector 22, the legacy "Languages" section in the main menu is no longer needed. It takes up space and attention, a few months should be long enough to make the point. – SJ + 19:04, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Support although this RfC will disappear from the archives if this page gets deleted as a result, so it should be stored somewhere else. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 16:37, 2 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Good point! Seems uncontroversial enough it doesn't need much discussion. But we should preserve this page... perhaps as a section under Wikipedia talk:Vector 2022? (and... done!) The ticket suggests it's been removed in the next update to mediawiki. – SJ + 04:38, 6 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
