Messina Hof

Messina Hof is a winery and vineyard in Bryan, Texas. It was established in 1977 by Paul and Merrill Bonarrigo. The vineyard is on 42 acres (17 ha) of Messina Hof’s 100-acre (40 ha) property. The estate is also home to a bed and breakfast, "The Villa," and a restaurant “The Vintage House”. In addition to the winery, the estate is home to The Villa bed and breakfast, The Vintage house restaurant and the Winemaster’s Room wine bar.

History

Sunset overview of the Messina Hof Vineyard

Messina Hof gets its name from the homelands of its founders. Winemaker Paul Bonarrigo’s family dates back seven generations to Messina, Sicily. Merrill’s family is from Hof, Germany.

Grapes grown on the estate are the Black Spanish or Lenoir varietals. Tours are offered and the winery is estimated to get more than 250,000 visitors per year.[1] Messina Hof wines are available in many US states, and the winery is part of a substantial wine industry in Texas, the fifth largest wine producing state in the U.S.[2][citation needed] Messina Hof produces 33,000 cases of wine a year.[3] Their wines have been featured at Super Bowl XXXVIII in Houston, Texas, and the 2005 Presidential Inauguration.

To honor Messina Hof's 30 years in the Texas wine industry and strengthening of the Bryan community, Bryan Mayor Mark Conlee proclaimed July 21, 2007, “Messina Hof Harvest Day.” [4]

Paul Bonarrigo

Paul Bonarrigo has been making wine since the age of 16. Bonarrigo's family has been making wine in Sicily since 1800. Bonarrigo is currently chairman of the Texas Wine Industry Development Advisory Committee. He was nominated by the Texas Department of Agriculture. He is the marketing chair for the Texas Wine and Grape Growers Association and served three terms as its president.[5]

Activities

The Vintage House is the restaurant on the Messina Hof estate. Dishes revolve around the wines and the menu changes quarterly. The Vintage House Restaurant is one of few restaurants in the Brazos Valley to offer tableside flambé desserts, cooking classes with the chef, and Chef’s Tables. There is also a bed and breakfast called "The Villa" that allows for guests to stay overnight on the property in one of ten unique rooms. The newly constructed Wine Bar allows for guests to taste wines before purchasing.

The Austin American-Statesman called it "the most 'interactive'" of all the Texas wineries.[6] Guests can participate in weekly Murder Mystery Dinners, sunset tours, and wine stomping races. The Bonariggos host wine appreciation seminars where guests are educated about wine pairing and the proper way to enjoy wine.
