Meyliservet Kadın (Template:Lang-ota; c. 1854 – 3 December 1903) was a consort of Sultan Murad V of the Ottoman Empire.
Early life
Born in 1869 in Batumi, Meyliservet was a Circassian.[1] She had an elder sister, who was the wife of the ambassador to Rome. Her sister took her with her to Italy, and provided her with an excellent education. She learned several languages. After remaining in Italy for more than eight years, the two sisters returned to Istanbul where they lived a lonely life. Meyliservet’s sister came to know of Refia Sultan. Her sister took Meyliservet along with her to the Princess. While there Meyliservet liked the palace life so much that she decided that she would not leave. Refia Sultan took Meyliservet into the palace and had her provided with special training.[2][3]
Marriage
Some months went by, the holidays came around, and Şehzade Murad who at the time was the heir apparent, called at his sister’s villa in order to pay his respects.[4] Meyliservet waited upon Murad, and caught his eye. Refia Sultan sent Meyliservet forthwith to the apartments of the Heir located at the Dolmabahçe Palace,[5] where she married Murad on 8 June 1874.[1] She was given the rank of Fourth Princess (Meyliservet Dördüncü Hanım). On 2 July 1875, she gave birth to her only child, Fehime Sultan.[6][7][8]
After Sultan Abdülaziz's deposition in 1876, Şehzade Murad ascended the throne as Murad V. Meyliservet was given the rank of Fourth Primary Empress[9][8] (Meyliservet Dördüncü Kadın). Murad reigned for three months, and was deposed because of his alleged mental instability. His half-brother Sultan Abdul Hamid II ascended the throne. He confined Murad, his family and whole of his entourage in the Çırağan Palace located at Beşiktaş. Meyliservet and her one-year-old daughter also followed Murad into confinement.
Death
Meyliservet Kadın died of a short illness[10] at the Çırağan Palace on 9 December 1903.[3]
