Michael "Mike" Homik (born 6 July 1978) is a New Zealand professional basketball player who last played for the Manawatu Jets of the New Zealand National Basketball League (NZNBL). He was part of the silver medal winning Tall Blacks team at the 2006 Commonwealth Games. He has won four NZNBL championships: two with the Auckland Stars (2004, 2005) and two with the Waikato Pistons (2008, 2009).

Early life and career

Homik was born and raised in Hamilton, New Zealand where he attended St John's College[1][2] and played 14 games for the Waikato Warriors between 1996 and 1997.

In 1997, Homik moved to the United States to attend West Valley JC. In 1999, he transferred to Albertson College of Idaho where he graduated from in 2002.

Professional career

In 2002, Homik signed with the Akron Wingfoots for the 2002–03 NABL season.

In 2003, he joined the Auckland Stars of the New Zealand NBL.[3] Later that year, he signed with the New Zealand Breakers for the 2003–04 NBL season. He re-joined the Auckland Stars for the 2004 and 2005 NZNBL seasons.

In 2006, he joined the Harbour Heat for the 2006 New Zealand NBL season. In 2007, he joined the Waikato Pistons for the 2007 New Zealand NBL season.

In July 2007, he signed with the Perth Wildcats for the 2007–08 NBL season.[4] Following the ANBL season, he re-joined the Pistons where he played until 2010.

In December 2010, he signed with the Manawatu Jets for the 2011 New Zealand NBL season.[5] He managed just two games for the Jets in 2011 before being ruled out for the rest of the season with a broken left ankle.[6] He later re-signed with the Jets for the 2012 season.

Following the 2012 season, he announced his retirement from basketball due to his acting commitments.[2] However, he was lured out of retirement in February 2013 to join the Wellington Saints.[7][8]

On 10 April 2015, Homik was called up by the Manawatu Jets to help them deal with numerous injuries, and joined them for their game against the Saints the following day.[9] He recorded just two rebounds in his sole game back for the Jets.[10]

Personal

Off the basketball court, Homik has been a stunt man in films such as The Hobbit as well as various television commercials.[11] In 2016, Homilk along with Casey Frank played the role of a villain in the Bollywood film Mohenjo Daro starring Hrithik Roshan and directed by Ashutosh Gowariker.[citation needed]
