Nayak (title)

Nayak is a historic title used in the medivial times by military governors[1] of Kakatiya kingdom and Vijayanagara Empire[2] and later by various Nayak kingdoms ruling South India. Today the title is used by various castes and ethnic groups across India. The name remains same in Konkan coast wheras in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Tamil Nadu the surnames are Naidu adn Naicker.
