Nikita is an American television drama for The CW Television Network. It is based on the 1990 French film Nikita, 1993 remake Point of No Return, and the 1997 television series La Femme Nikita. It will premiere on September 9, 2010, Thursdays at 9:00 pm Eastern/8:00 pm Central.[1]

The series stars Maggie Q as Nikita, a spy and assassin who has gone rogue. She is now working to bring down Division, the secret government agency which recruited her. Meanwhile, Division trains its next crop of young killers.[2]

Plot

The story centers on a fictional secret branch of the CIA, known as Division, which trains young assassins. It usually selects young people with a troubled background, often in prison and on death row. After identifying promising candidates, Division fakes their death and offers them a new life. The new recruits must learn to shut off their emotions to become efficient killers.

  • Maggie Q as Nikita. Six years before the start of the series, Division rescued Nikita from death row, faking her execution, and forced her to become an assassin. After being betrayed, Nikita turns rogue and becomes determined to bring down Division and free the other recruits. Maggie Q will perform her own stunts.[3]
  • Lyndsy Fonseca as Alex, a street kid arrested after a robbery. Michael and Division offer her a chance of a new life.[4]
  • Shane West as Michael, a Division operative. He has been charged with training new recruits and bringing back Nikita, for whom he has lingering feelings.
  • Aaron Stanford as Birkhoff
  • Ashton Holmes as Thom
  • Tiffany Hines as Jaden
  • Melinda Clarke as Amanda
  • Xander Berkeley as Percy, head of Division and main antagonist.

Production

The CW had long been interested in an action-adventure series centered on a strong female character.[3] On January 27, 2010, The CW ordered a pilot episode of Nikita.[5] In February, Maggie Q was cast as Nikita, with Shane West as Michael.[6][7] In March, Lyndsy Fonseca won the role of Alex.[8] On May 18, 2010, Nikita was officially ordered to series for a fall premiere.[9] The 2010 television series is more closely tied to Luc Besson's 1990 French film Nikita than the 1997 television series, La Femme Nikita.[10]

Executive producer Craig Silverstein was approached by Warner Bros. who owned the rights.[11] Silverstein said, "My first thought was I love Nikita. My second thought was, 'it's been done.' Could it be done fresh? Could we have a take where you didn't know where this story would end?"[11] As a result, two major changes have been made, one of which is the decision to have the story take place after Nikita has escaped. Maggie Q stated, "No one's told her story after the fact. No one knows where she is going."[12] In addition, a new character, Alex, was introduced who has an unexpected backstory.[13] The series will be a mix of a weekly mission/counter-mission, and a story arc running through the season that explores Nikita's relationships with Alex and Michael.[13]

The first preview for the show features the song "Rockstar 101" by Rihanna.

Critical reception

As of July 9, 2010, Metacritic reports that most early reviews of the pilot place the series in the "Has Potential" category, with praise for Maggie Q in the lead role, the look of the show, solid action sequences, and an intriguing twist at the end, but note that the dialogue needs some humor.[14]

International broadcasts

On July 26, 2010, Living secured the rights to air Nikita in the United Kingdom and is expected to start airing the show in the autumn of 2010.[15] In Australia, GO! has secured the rights to air the series, and will fast-track Nikita in September.[16]
