In the 7 October 2023 surprise attack on Israel, Palestinian militants from the Gaza Strip invaded the Nir Oz kibbutz in southern Israel, murdering scores of its residents, burning homes, and abducting civilians.[1] Bild reported that 20 people from the kibbutz were killed and 80 were kidnapped.[2] The Jerusalem Post also estimated that 80 people were abducted from Nir Oz.[3] An account by a veteran war correspondent reported that "around a quarter of the people of Nir Oz were assassinated, kidnapped, or injured in a very severe way. Those who survived have no place to come back to."[4] According to one report, 240 of the community's 400 residents were either missing or confirmed dead.[5][6] The surviving kibbutz members were evacuated to Eilat.[7]

Hamas militants murdered the Kedem family in their secure room at Nir Oz: Tamar Kedem Siman Tov; her husband, Yonatan (Johnny); her mother-in-law; two 6-year-old daughters, Shahar and Arbel; and son Omer, aged 4.[8] One elderly woman's murder was filmed and posted to her Facebook wall by her killers.[9] Polish-Israeli historian Alex Dancyg was among the abductees from Nir Oz.[10]
