Nuno Albertino Varela Tavares (born 26 January 2000) is a Portuguese professional footballer who plays as a left-back for Premier League club Arsenal.

Club career

Benfica

On 27 October 2018, Tavares made his professional debut with Benfica B in a 2018–19 LigaPro match against Sporting da Covilhã. He played the full 90 minutes of the 3–2 home win.[2]

On 4 August 2019, Tavares made his debut with Benfica in the 2019 Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira, a 5–0 win against city rivals Sporting CP at the Estádio Algarve.[3] A week later, he made his Primeira Liga debut against F.C. Paços de Ferreira and scored his first goal to open a 5–0 home win, adding two assists.[4]

Arsenal

On 10 July 2021, Tavares joined Arsenal on a long-term contract in a deal worth around £8 million.[5][6] Tavares made his debut for the Gunners in a 2–0 defeat to Brentford, coming on as a second half substitute replacing Calum Chambers.[7]

Personal life

Born in Portugal, Tavares is of Cape Verdean descent.[8]
