Paton is a city in Greene County, Iowa, United States. The population was 236 at the 2010 census.
History
Paton had its start by the building of the railroad through that territory.[4]
Geography
Paton is located at 42°9′50″N 94°15′18″W / 42.16389°N 94.25500°W (42.163887, -94.254971).[5]
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.56 square miles (1.45 km2), all of it land.[1]

2010 census
As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 236 people, 108 households, and 59 families residing in the city. The population density was 421.4 inhabitants per square mile (162.7/km2). There were 120 housing units at an average density of 214.3 per square mile (82.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 96.2% White, 1.7% African American, and 2.1% Native American. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.0% of the population.
There were 108 households of which 28.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.7% were married couples living together, 8.3% had a female householder with no husband present, 4.6% had a male householder with no wife present, and 45.4% were non-families. 42.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.19 and the average family size was 3.03.
The median age in the city was 34.8 years. 25.8% of residents were under the age of 18; 7.7% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 25% were from 25 to 44; 27.2% were from 45 to 64; and 14.4% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 48.3% male and 51.7% female.
2000 census
As of the census[7] of 2000, there were 265 people, 118 households, and 71 families residing in the city. The population density was 468.3 persons per square mile (179.5/km²). There were 126 housing units at an average density of 222.7 per square mile (85.3/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.49% White, 0.38% Asian, 1.13% from other races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.51% of the population.
There were 118 households out of which 27.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.4% were married couples living together, 6.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.0% were non-families. 37.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 24.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.25 and the average family size was 2.96.
In the city the population was spread out with 26.4% under the age of 18, 6.0% from 18 to 24, 24.5% from 25 to 44, 18.1% from 45 to 64, and 24.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 93.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $32,500, and the median income for a family was $46,250. Males had a median income of $27,083 versus $24,821 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,256. About 4.5% of families and 7.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.6% of those under the age of eighteen and 3.6% of those sixty five or over.
