Peggy (born c. early 2018) is a British dog notable for winning the title of Britain's ugliest dog. She gained popularity for her ugliness, and made her acting debut as Dogpool in the 2024 film Deadpool & Wolverine.
Early life
[edit]Holly Middleton adopted Peggy online near the end of 2018. She was six months old at the time, and she was the runt of an accidental litter.[1][2] Peggy was named after Middleton's great-grandmother.[3] She is a crossbreed between a Pug and a Chinese Crested Dog, also known as a Pugese.[4][5][6] In 2023, Peggy was entered into an ugly dog competition held by a photography printing firm called ParrotPrint.[4] She won, earning the title of "Britain's ugliest dog,"[1] and the founder of ParrotPrint described Peggy's success as "a classic rags to riches story."[7]
Film career
[edit]Due to her success in the ugly dog competition, she appeared on television and eventually entered the film industry.[8] She appeared on BBC Breakfast,[9][10] and later actor Ryan Reynolds posted a picture of Peggy in a Deadpool costume on social media, revealing that she would appear as an animal actor in the 2024 Marvel Cinematic Universe film Deadpool & Wolverine.[11][12] Reynolds stated that he was a proponent for Peggy's inclusion in the film because "she feels like the animal manifestation of Wade Wilson."[13][14] For the film, Peggy was trained by Jules Tottman, an animal trainer for films; she had no prior training.[15] Peggy learned how to jump into Ryan Reynolds' arms and lick cheese off of the faces of actors.[16] According to Reynolds, Peggy underwent more training for the film than his co-star Hugh Jackman.[14]
Peggy walked the red carpet with Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman at the film's premiere in London.[17] To celebrate, HMV temporarily replaced the image of Nipper on their logo with Peggy.[5] She also appeared at an event in Kingston upon Hull to meet with fans in August 2024.[7]
In October 2024, Peggy was nominated for a Fidos Award for her work in Deadpool & Wolverine.[18] The awards ceremony is planned to take place in February 2025.[19]
