Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical dry shrubland, rivers, intermittent rivers, freshwater marshes, and intermittent freshwater marshes. The species is threatened by habitat loss.

According to C.Michael Hogan, the species breeding sites are ephemeral lentic water bodies, which surface waters are scarce in the species range.
