"Physical" is a song recorded by English singer Dua Lipa, released as the second single from her upcoming second studio album, Future Nostalgia (2020). The song was written by Sarah Hudson, Clarence Coffee Jr, Jason Evigan and Lipa, with production handled by Evigan and Koz. It was released on 31 January 2020 through Warner Records on digital platforms globally and contemporary hit radio in the United Kingdom.[2][3] The song interpolates lyrics from the 1981 single of the same name by Olivia Newton-John.[4] "Physical" has been described a synth-pop song, with influences of 1980s and techno music.

The accompanying music video for "Physical" premiered through Lipa's official YouTube channel on the same day. It was directed by Lope Serrano and depicts Lipa dancing in a set, containing various colour-coded sections and animated visuals.

Background and promotion

In November 2019, Lipa released "Don't Start Now" as the lead single from her upcoming second studio album, Future Nostalgia (2020).[5] The song attained both critical and commercial success, becoming her seventh top 10 entry on the UK Singles Chart and second top 20 entry on the US Billboard Hot 100. The following month, the title track of the album was released as a promotional single to further critical success.[6][7]

On 20 January 2020, Lipa posted the first teasers of "Physical" on social media, including tweets stating "remember the signs..." and "another day closer".[8][9] Stills from its music video were posted in the following days, accompanied by lyrics of the song.[10] The official cover art and release date for "Physical" was officially announced on 24 January.[2]

Composition

"Physical" was written by Sarah Hudson, Clarence Coffee Jr, its producer Jason Evigan and Lipa.[11] Produced by Evigan and Koz,[11] the song runs for three minutes and fourteen seconds. Musically, "Physical" is an electropop and synth-pop song with influences of 80's disco written in the key of C major at tempo 147 beats per minute.[12][13] Rania Aniftos of Billboard described the song as "an out-of-this-world love to a catchy, techno beat". The singer herself revealed that the song was "'80s inspired and quite Flashdance-y".[14]

Critical reception

Cerys Kenneally of The Line of Best Fit praised the song for being a "powerful new banger", while Rolling Stone's Althea Legaspi described it as "club-ready" and thought the singer emulated "Olivia Newton-John's sentiments in her 1981 song of the same name".[15][16] James Rettig at Stereogum noted the lyrical resemblance with Newton-John's song as well, saying that "the song directly calls back to the most famous pop song that's named "Physical", because what else would you follow up "Let’s get" with?".[17]

Music video

The music video was released on 31 January 2020 with several trailers preceding the video premiere.[18] It was directed by Lope Serrano.[14] The visuals feature "Lipa dancing in a giant hangar filled with various video sets and dancers in multicolor outfits".[4]
