Pocahontas is a city in Pocahontas County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,970 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Pocahontas County.Template:GR

This city was named after the famous Native American princess from Jamestown, Virginia. Other geographical names in the county related to the Jamestown Settlement are Rolfe, Powhatan Township, and Varina. [citation needed]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.9 square miles (4.8 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 1,970 people, 883 households, and 549 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,059.8 people per square mile (408.9/km²). There were 946 housing units at an average density of 508.9/sq mi (196.4/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.68% White, 0.25% African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 0.20% from other races, and 0.61% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.51% of the population.

There were 883 households out of which 25.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.3% were married couples living together, 7.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.8% were non-families. 36.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 24.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.16 and the average family size was 2.79.

In the city the population was spread out with 23.1% under the age of 18, 4.8% from 18 to 24, 22.1% from 25 to 44, 25.3% from 45 to 64, and 24.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 45 years. For every 100 females there were 84.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 79.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $30,865, and the median income for a family was $42,690. Males had a median income of $29,806 versus $19,886 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,556. About 6.7% of families and 9.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 12.9% of those under age 18 and 5.9% of those age 65 or over.
