- 1893 – The John Bull, the world's oldest surviving operable steam locomotive, arrives back in Washington, D.C., after traveling under its own power from Chicago, Illinois.
20th century
[edit]- 1902 – The Vale of Rheidol Railway in Wales starts passenger services.
- 1939 – Train D180 collides with the delayed and overcrowded train D10 at Genthin, Germany, killing 278 and injuring 453; this accident results in the highest number of injuries of all rail accidents in Germany.
