Powers (comics) |
Powers is an FX Network American television adaptation of the Powers comic book series that has finished shooting and is expected to begin airing in 2012.
History
The comic book debuted in 2000 by Image Comics and continued until 2004, when Marvel Comic produced it under the Icon Comics banner.[1] The comic book series involves homicide detectives Christian Walker and Deena Pilgrim who investigate cases involving superheroes and supervillians with superhuman powers, which are common in their world. They work in a special homicide division called Powers. Sony Pictures had optioned the series for film production in 2001.[1]
In 2009, Brian Michael Bendis, creator of the comic book, confirmed plans to develop a Powers television show on the FX network as well as his involvement as the writer of the pilot for the show.[2] In February 2011, a greenlit pilot of the show scripted by Charles H. Eglee was announced as a co-production by Sony Pictures Television and FX Network.[1] Charles S. Dutton became the first castmember in May 2011 when he signed on to play Captain Cross.[3] Imminent filming in Chicago within weeks was announced in June 2011.[4] The following week, Lucy Punch was cast as Deena Pilgrim.[5] Katee Sackhoff had campaigned for the part.[6] Although FX was rumored to be courting Kyle Chandler for the part of Walker,[6] the next day Jason Patric was cast in the part.[7][8] Later in June, Carly Foulkes was cast as Retro Girl and Bailee Madison was cast as Calista.[9][10]
Filming began in Chicago in early July 2011 and ended in early August.[11][12] The series is slated to begin airing in 2012,[13] with a likely June 2012 air date if a full season is ordered.[12] FX hopes that the show will develop into a "gritty" crime drama much like its own The Shield or David Fincher's Seven and Zodiac.[14] Although the show is set in an imaginary world, the Chicago 'L' is prominent in the show.[12]
