Qorakoʻl also spelled as Karakul (Uzbek: Qorakoʻl/Қоракўл, قره کۉل; Russian: Каракуль) is a city in the Bukhara Region of Uzbekistan. It is the capital of Qorakoʻl District (Qorakoʻl tumani).[2] "Qorakoʻl" means "black lake" in Uzbek language. Its population is 22,300 (2016).[1]
History
[edit]The name of the city means 'black lake' (< qora 'black' + ko'l 'lake') in Uzbek. The Turkic name of Lake Karakul in this area has been known since the beginning of the 8th century.[3] The status of the city was granted in 1980 (previously - urban-type settlement).
