R. Narayana Murthy is an Indian film actor, director, composer, singer and producer known for his works predominantly in Telugu Cinema. He owns a film production company called Sneha Chitra Pictures. He is known for left-oriented films that expose the exploitation of society's lower strata. His films tend to revolve around themes like the atrocities of the hegemonic classes against the helpless and Telangana Movement. In 1994, he directed Erra Sainyam premiered at the International Film Festival of India in the mainstream section.[2]

All his films address contemporary social problems: unemployment, World Bank policies, problems in the Third World countries, environmental issues, dams, rehabilitation problems, land issues, political turmoil, etc. Hence the exploited people became the main audience of his films. He was starred in hits like Ardharatri Swaatantryam, Adavi Diviteelu, Laal Salaam, Dandora, Erra Sainyam, Cheemala Dandu, Dalam, Cheekati Suryulu, Ooru Manadiraa and Vegu Chukkalu.[3][4]

Early life

He was born in the village of Mallampeta, Rowthulapudi Mandalam, East Godavari district, Andhra Pradesh. He was not married.

Career

Dasari Narayana Rao gave him a role in Krishna's film Neramu Siksha (1973) and was given a meaty role in the film Needa. Subsequently, Narayana Murthy acted in Dasari's Sita Ramulu (1980), Korikale Gurralaite, Vishwaroopam and K. Bapayya's Agni Poolu. Dasari made him a full-fledged actor with a film titled Sangeeta produced by Hara Gopal under the Purna pictures banner and also 'Orey Rickshaw'.

Narayana Murthy was then started Ardharatri Swatantram as his first venture under his production house 'Sneha Chitra Pictures' in Rampachodavaram of East Godavari district on June 10, 1984. The film was released on 6 November 1986 on the eve of T. Krishna's death anniversary. T. Krishna played the role of a naxalite in that film. It was a big hit at the box office and gave Murthy a reputation as a communist.
