It is not possible to relate this species to any known populations of frogs. It is placed incertae sedis in the genus Fejervarya. Its type locality is "Bengale",[1] overlapping with the modern states of India and Bangladesh. It is included on the list of "lost" amphibians of India.[2]

Rana brama has been listed as "Data Deficient" (as Fejervarya brama) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species,[3] but as of 2015, it is no longer included on the list.[4]
